IMMC Clinical Cardiology Advanced Elective

Rotation Overview

Students on this 4 week rotation, will assist with the evaluation and treatment of patients admitted and seen in consultation by the Cardiology Consult Service. Students will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate patient care skills expected of a first-year resident under the direct supervision of a Cardiology Division faculty member. Students will see patients with common cardiovascular problems including chest pain, acute coronary syndromes, congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, syncope dysrhythmias, and perioperative cardiac risk assessment. The student will participate in daily teaching rounds with faculty. There are no on-call responsibilities. The student will attend other educational conferences of the Internal Medicine Residency Program including daily noon conference and weekly Grand Rounds conferences.

Resources

1. IMMC Health Sciences Library: Students have 24-hour access 7 days per week to the library. A student picture UPHDM ID is needed for after-hours entry. Internet and photocopying is available. Students may also call the Health Sciences librarians for assistance at 515-241-6490.

Conferences

1. Morning conferences in Thompson Auditorium from 7:30-8:30 AM every Wednesday, which include Grand Rounds, Clinicopathologic Conference, and Morbidity and Mortality Conference.

2. Noon Conferences, daily core Internal Medicine lecture series, 12:00-1:00 PM, in the Dorner Seminar Room. See monthly conference schedule for details.

3. Morning Report is scheduled on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 8:00-8:30 AM.

Evaluation and Grading

The student will be evaluated by the attending physician assigned to the Cardiology Teaching Service. Feedback will be provided regularly on an informal basis. The final grade will be determined by the attending physician based upon the overall performance of the student during the rotation.  Students may also receive mid-clerkship feedback and/or an evaluation to complete of the rotation and/or of the faculty member(s) with whom they worked.
