IMMC Clinical Nephrology Advanced Elective
Rotation Overview
During this four week rotation, students will be assigned to work under the direct supervision of one of the Nephrology Division teaching faculty physicians. Students will assist with the evaluation and management of patients that are assigned to the Nephrology Service. Responsibilities will include the completion of initial history and physical examination of patients that are either admitted to the Nephrology Service, or on whom Nephrology consultation is requested by another physician or surgeon.
The student will write initial orders, and daily orders thereafter, on their assigned patients. They will see their assigned patients and write progress notes on these patients daily. There are no call responsibilities with this rotation.
The student will have an opportunity to gain greater knowledge of diseases commonly encountered in nephrology, including acute renal failure, chronic renal failure, and both electrolyte disorders and acid-base disturbances. Students will participate in daily teaching rounds, and also will attend other daily teaching conferences conducted by the Internal Medicine Residency Program. There may be another student or resident assigned to this service as well.
Additional information about this advanced elective can be found in the Carver College of Medicine Advanced Pathway Course Descriptions under IM:8457.
