ILH Family Medicine Inpatient Sub-Internship

Rotation Overview

During this 4 week rotation students are assigned to work with the Inpatient Family Medicine team. This team includes Family Medicine faculty, a first year resident, a third year resident, clinical pharmacist, behaviorist, and the occasional pharmacy student. Requirements of this rotation include admitting and managing patients assigned to the student by the senior resident under his/her supervision. Students are expected to round with the team two Saturday's during the rotation.  Students also attend morning check-out and teaching conferences provided by the residency program and prepare brief (5-10 min) presentations to the team on topics selected by faculty or residents.

Objectives

1. To provide the medical student with a strong, patient-oriented interactive experience in an inpatient family practice environment.

2. To provide the medical student with additional clinical skills in the management of hospitalized patients.

3. To provide the medical student with a family practice philosophy of health care delivery.

Resources

1. Iowa Methodist Medical Center Health Sciences Library - Students have 24-hour access 7 days per week to the IMMC Health Sciences library. A UnityPoint - Des Moines picture ID badge will be needed for after-hours entry. Internet and photocopying is available. Students may call the Health Sciences librarians for assistance at 515-241-6490.

2. Students may find useful articles from the "American Family Physician"  journal by searching the American Academy of Family Physicians site.

Conferences

Students are required to come to morning check-out and teaching conferences provided by the residency. These are held in Conference Room C on Iowa Lutheran Hospital Level B at 7:30-8:30 AM, Monday through Friday.

Evaluations

Each student will have a mid-clerkship evaluation. The student coordinator/site director for the program is responsible for completing performance evaluations and returning them to UICCOM . Students may receive an evaluation to complete of the rotation and/or of the faculty member(s) with whom they worked.

Parking

ILH parking is available at the hospital free of charge. Students can park in the visitor parking spaces.

Meals @ ILH

Meals are provided while working.

Call Room

A private call room is available for students when on-call.
