IMMC Internal Medicine Consult Service Advanced Elective

Rotation Overview

During this four week rotation on the Internal Medicine Consult Service, the student will be assigned to work under the direct supervision of an internist working in a hospitalist model. The student will assist with the evaluation and management of patients seen by the Consult Service. Responsibilities will include completion of the initial evaluation of patients admitted to the Consult Service and patients seen when consultation is requested by another physician or surgeon. The student will write both the initial orders, as well as daily orders thereafter on the patients to whom they are assigned. The student will follow his or her patients daily, and write daily progress notes. The student will round daily with the hospitalist staff physician. There are no call responsibilities with this rotation.

This rotation will allow the student to gain greater knowledge in the field of general internal medicine and consultative medicine, and will include exposure to preoperative risk assessment, preoperative management of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in the surgical patient, and other disorders common to a general medicine consult service. Students will also have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the patient care skills expected of a first year resident. In addition to daily teaching rounds, students will be expected to attend the other daily teaching conferences of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. There may be a second year resident assigned to this service as well.

Additional information about this advanced elective can be found in the Carver College of Medicine Advanced Pathway Course Descriptions under IM:8454.
