IMMC Medical Intensive Care Unit Advanced Elective
Rotation Overview
Students in this rotation will function as a sub-intern in the IMMC Medical Intensive Care Unit. During the four week rotation in the MICU, the student will be assigned to work under the direct supervision of a pulmonary/critical care staff physician and a senior level internal medicine resident.
Students will assist in the admission, evaluation, and management of patients admitted to the unit. Responsibilities will include completion of an admission history and physical examination, writing admission orders and daily orders thereafter, and following daily the patients to whom they are assigned. The student will write daily progress notes, and may perform, under supervision, a variety of procedures, including arterial line placement, central venous line placement, thoracentesis, and tube thoracostomy. The student will attend daily teaching rounds and teaching conferences conducted by the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
This rotation will allow the student to gain a greater understanding of disorders and diseases commonly found in the intensive care unit, including sepsis, acute respiratory failure, multi-system organ failure, and acute coronary syndromes. Students will also have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate patient care skills expected of a first year resident.
Additional information about this advanced pathway can be found in the Carver College of Medicine Advanced Clerkships Course Descriptions under IM:8453.
On-Call
The student will take call with the first year resident one weeknight each week and one of the weekends during the month.
