Community-Based Obstetrics Rotation

Overview:

Welcome to the elective Community-Based Obstetrics rotation at Iowa Methodist Medical Center! The objectives of this rotation are to provide 3rd or 4th year residents experiences in evaluation and management of labor, obstetric procedures including delivery, and obstetric imaging as well as receive exposure to community-based private practice including common issues in practice management.

Approximately two weeks prior to the start of the rotation, residents are sent information regarding housing as well as directions to the Des Moines Area Medical Education Consortium Office located on the Iowa Methodist Medical Center (IMMC) campus.  New residents should report to the Consortium Office, ground level of the Education and Research Center, 1415 Woodland, Suite 130 at 7:30 am on the first day of the rotation for initial orientation.  Residents will complete required paperwork and be provided with a photo ID, timesheets, and information on charging meals.

During the rotation, the resident will work with Dr. Paul Gisi and his associates at UnityPoint Clinic -  Obstetrics and Gynecology.  The resident will work Monday through Thursday primarily in the labor and delivery suite area at IMMC.  In the labor and delivery area, the resident will work directly with obstetrics hospitalist physicians.  They may be allowed to participate in some gynecologic surgery cases.  The resident will return to UIHC on Fridays for continuity clinic and other educational activities.  The resident will not be assigned any overnight call in Des Moines and will be limited to the 80-hour workweek and other ACGME work hours restrictions during the rotation.   The resident will participate in the weekend call pool at UIHC.
