Welcome to the elective Obstetrics rotation for UIHC Obstetrics and Gynecology resident at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Orientation  to the rotation and the hospital will be provided on the first day in Des Moines.  The resident will report to the Des Moines Medical Education Consortium Offices (1415 Woodland, Suite 130) at 7:30 am on the first day of the rotation for initial orientation.  

During the rotation, the resident will work with Dr. Paul Gisi and associates at UnityPoint Obstetrics and Gynecology.  The resident will work Monday through Thursday primarily in the labor and delivery suite area at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.  The resident will gain additional experience in the evaluation and management of labor, obstetric procedures including delivery, and obstetric imaging.  In the labor and delivery area, the resident will work directly with obstetrics hospitalist physicians.  The resident may be allowed to participate in some gynecologic surgery cases.  The resident may also gain exposure to community-based private practice including common issues in practice management.  The resident will return to UIHC on Fridays for continuity clinic and other educational activities.  The resident will not be assigned any overnight call in Des Moines and will be limited to the 80-hour workweek and other ACGME duty hours restrictions during the rotation.   The resident will participate in the weekend call pool at UIHC.  



During the rotation residents will stay at the InnTowner Apartments, 1300 Woodland Avenue in Des Moines.  This complex is located immediately south of the Iowa Methodist/Blank Children's campus. IMMC Health Sciences Library: You have 24-hour access 7 days per week to the IMMC Health Sciences library via your picture ID badge. You will need your picture ID for after-hours entry. There is free internet and photocopying at all times. The librarians will be glad to access information and do literature searches for you. You may call the Health Science librarians for assistance at 515-241-6490.

There is a fitness center located across the street from the InnTowner Apartments.  If you are interested in using the fitness center, there is required paperwork that needs to be completed.  Wendi Kruger can provide the registration form that must be completed when you meet with her at the start of the rotation.  Once registered, you will have 24-hour access 7 days per week using your picture ID badge.
