IMMC Internal Medicine Sub-Internship
Rotation Overview
During this four week subinternship, students will function as an intern-equivalent on the Younker 8 pulmonary teaching service. Students will assist with the admission and direct care of patients admitted to the pulmonary service, and responsibilities will include completion of an admission history and physical examination, writing admission orders and daily orders thereafter, and following daily the patients to whom they are assigned. The student will also write daily progress notes.
This rotation will allow the student to gain greater knowledge in the field of pulmonary disease, and will include exposure to common problems including asthma, COPD, lung cancers, pneumonia, interstitial lung diseases, and obstructive sleep apnea. In addition, students will have the opportunity to provide ongoing medical care to patients transferred from the ICU to the Pulmonary Service, and will therefore be exposed to other common medical problems, including diabetes mellitus and its complications, drug overdoses, complicated infections and other disorders commonly found on a general medical service.
Students will also have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate patient care skills expected of an intern. They will participate in daily teaching rounds, and will attend other daily teaching conferences conducted by the Internal Medicine Residency Program. There will be a first year internal medicine resident assigned to this service as well.
Additional information about this advanced pathway can be found in the Carver College of Medicine Advanced Clerkships Course Descriptions under IM:8451.
