IMMC Surgery Trauma Critical Care Services Advanced Elective

Rotation Overview

During the course of the Surgical Trauma Critical Care Service rotation, the medical student is allowed to function as a senior level medical student under the direction of senior residents and attending staff. Specifically on the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, the student will participate in the management of critically ill patients from both surgical illnesses as well as trauma. During the course of this clerkship he/she/they, will become facile in the management of ventilator support; both initiating patients on ventilator support as well as monitoring their progress while on the ventilator. The student will become facile in the parameters for extubation and will participate in determining points of extubation. Also, during this clerkship the student will participate in providing central venous access for invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The student will demonstrate facility in both manual capabilities as well as abilities to participate in the management of the patients. The student will be exposed to pharmacological issues and will acquire knowledge of drug-to-drug interactions.

Students will attend all educational conferences of the surgery residency program, including the weekly trauma video conference.

Call

Students will take call one weeknight per week and one weekend during the rotation.

1. Greenfield's Surgery - Scientific Principles & Practice 4th ed. (Articles will be provided).

2. IMMC Health Sciences Library: Students have 24-hour access 7 days per week to the library. A student picture UPH-DM ID is needed for after-hours entry. Internet and photocopying are available. Students may also call the Health Sciences librarians for assistance at 515-241-6490.

1. Didactic Conferences (Wednesday @ 5:00 PM)

2. Trauma Video Reviews (Tuesday @ 4:00 PM weekly)

3. Multidisciplinary Trauma Rounds (Tuesday, Thursday @ 11:00 AM - ICU)

4. Mortality and Morbidity Conference (Thursday @ 7:00 AM weekly)

5. Grand Rounds Conference (Thursday @ 8:00 AM weekly)

Evaluations and Grading

1. Faculty may request the student to do a case presentation.

2. Faculty and Surgery Residents complete evaluations of students.

3. Program Director reviews and compiles all of the evaluations and returns the evaluations to Iowa City.

4. Students may also receive mid-clerkship feedback and/or an evaluation to complete of the rotation and/or of the faculty member(s) with whom they worked.

5. Final grading is determined based on overall performance and ensuring all requirements of the advanced elective are met.
