Family Medicine Clerkship

Overview:

This rotation is available to both M3 and M4 students. During this 4-week rotation students are assigned to work with faculty and senior residents at East Des Moines Family Care Center. Students are also expected to participate in nursing home rounds, inpatient rounds, OB rounds, and LaClinica clinics at times during this rotation. Requirements of this rotation include interviewing and examining clinic patients and presenting these patients to an assigned faculty preceptor. Students attend morning check-out and teaching conferences provided by the residency program.

Resources:

The following is a list of typical clinical problems that may be encountered on this rotation. This is not an all-inclusive list, and faculty and/or residents may add to this at any time:

  • Cardiology: ischemic heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias, congestive heart disease, hypertension, syncope, dyslipidemias
  • Pulmonology: hemoptysis, chronic obstructive pulmonary diease, pulmonary function tests, pneumonia, viral upper respiratory infections, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea
  • GI: acute/chronic diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, GI bleeding, dyspepsia, GIRD, hepatitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis
  • Hematologic/electrolyte/metabolic disorders: bleeding disorders, anemia, potassium, sodium, glucose, hypo/hyperthyroidism, adrenal disease
  • Rheumatology: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, 
  • Orthopedics: low back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain, elbow pain, wrist pain, problems of the foot and ankle, fractures, sports clearance
  • Gynecology: contraceptives, common gyne infections, bartholin glands, endometriosis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, abnormal pap results, menopause, osteoporosis
  • Obstetrics: preconception care, prenatal care/screening
  • Pediatrics: jaundice, failure to thrive, safety and accident prevention, vomiting/diarrhea/dehydration, constipation and encopresis, nocturnal enuresis, normal development and milestones
  • GU and Renal diseases: urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, benign prostatic hypertrophy, hematuria, urolithiasis, renal failure, incontinence
  • Ophthalmology: the red eye, trauma
  • Dermatology: pruritis, skin infections, acne, urticaria
  • Neurology: headache, dementia, delirium, seizures, restless leg syndrome, cerebral vascular disease, vertigo/dizziness
  • Psychiatry: mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse,
  • Otolaryngology: sinusitis, pharyngitis

Students may access useful articles from the "American Family Physician" by searching www.aafp.org. There are also many useful texts available in the staffing office at East Des Moines Family Care Center.

Conferences:

Students are required to attend morning check-out and teaching conferences provided by the residency. These are held in ILH's Conference Room C on level B from  7:30-8:30 am Monday-Friday. There is also an OB conference held on the second Tuesday of the month at noon in the same location.

 Evaluation:

The student coordinator (Dr. Josh Rehmann) for the program is responsible for filling out and returning evaluations to your medical school. Evaluation will be submitted electronically. Dr. Rehmann and the director would be happy to meet with you upon completion of your rotation to review your evaluation.

 Housing & Parking

Housing is available for out-of-town students . Please contact Wendi Kruger at the Des Moines Medical Education Consortium office if you need housing at 241-4455. Private, furnished apartments are available in an apartment complex on the Iowa Methodist Medical Center campus.

Free parking is available at East Des Moines Family Care Center. Students should park in the east/west facing spaces to save closer spots for our patients at the clinic.

Meals are provided while working.
